Types of Pals
(or Educator, Parent, Employer, Instructor, Coach)

By Michael Hebron

Tom Rath, author of Vital Friends: The People You Can’t Afford to Live Without, says friends
can fall into the following categories.  Undoubtedly, there is a fair degree of overlap:

Builder: Pumps you up, motivates you, helps you see your strengths, cheers you on.

Champion: Stands up for you, praises you, advocates for you when you’re not around.

Collaborator: Shares your interests and passions.

Companion: Is always there no matter what; the person you call first when something good or
bad happens.

Connector: Links you up with others who share your interests or goals; extends your network.

Energizer: Boosts your spirits, creates positive feelings; the person you call when you need a
laugh.

Mind-opener: Expands your vision, introduces you to new ideas, challenges conventional
thinking.

Navigator: Shares advice and direction; helps you talk through options and find your path.
